My treatment philosophy is based on the appreciation and ever deepening knowledge of the mind-brain-body connection. While rooted in psychodynamic theory, my approach utilizes a variety of established methods, tailoring the therapy to the unique needs and preferences of each patient. I am results focused and believe that successful treatment is reflected in positive changes outside the therapy session in addition to a positive and meaningful experience in the session. I believe in the value of empirical evidence in diagnosis and treatment, always referencing the scientific literature to answer questions. My experience confirms the research findings that psychotherapy focused on emotional experiencing and behavioral change, combined with the judicious use of medication when necessary, brings significant benefits. The essential starting point of this process is an accurate clinical diagnosis. To achieve this I take great care to understand in detail the specific symptoms, history, circumstances and concerns of each patient.
I have expertise in the interaction between physical ailments and psychiatric conditions and in the use of medications for a wide range of psychiatric diagnoses. However, I minimize the use of medication whenever possible, preferring to help patients enhance their own self-regulating capacities through the work of emotional processing, personal insight and behavioral change. I believe in a holistic approach to diagnosis and treatment, integrating nutritional and metabolic testing, vitamin, nutrient and herbal supplementation. Working with a team of colleagues, I prescribe acupuncture, energy work and/or corrective bodywork when indicated. However, I always look to the scientific literature to support these recommendations, knowing that there are many appealing but unfounded claims in the non-traditional medicine world.
Getting to know people, understanding their challenges and pains, engaging with them in deep reflections about life, and helping them resolve entrenched maladaptive patterns and achieve goals, has been a profoundly meaningful and fulfilling pursuit. I feel very fortunate to have found my way to this rewarding work.
